A medieval grave holding the remains of a woman and a foetus in-between her legs has been discovered by Italian archaeologists. The researchers view it as an example of "coffin birth," also known as "post-mortem foetal extrusion."

Coffin birth is a rare phenomenon that occurs in the decomposition stage. Gas builds up in the body of a pregnant woman after two to five days after her death, eventually pushing the baby out through the vaginal canal. The foetus was already dead at the time of its mother's burial according to researchers.
